About Our Winery
Both Keel Farms and the winery are located on 25 acres in Plant City, Florida. Joe has been growing blueberries in Florida for the past nine years and has recently purchased another 10 acres to plant blueberries in Lithia, Florida.
The story of our winery is one of blind luck really. Joe Keel, a native Florida Blueberry farmer has been growing 30 acres of blueberries on two separate farms in the Plant City, Florida area for more than nine years. After harvesting these berries each April, the berried that are not sold as fresh fruit are frozen. Joe asked himself "what can I do with this extra fruit? Jellies? Jams? Pies?... What about Blueberry Wine?"
So Joe teamed up with Chase Marden, a Vermont native who had experience developing fruit wines back home in Burlington, Vermont. They partnered to develop a line of wines under the Keel and Curley label and began bottling in October 2003 starting with 100% blueberry wines. We now produce 16 different varieties.
The highbush blueberries are hand picked, fermented and bottled right on Keel Farms. The blueberry wines come dry, semidry and sweet.
